Arthur represents the character of the English traditional gentleman.
Hercule Poirot :
Hercule Poirot's friend, Hastings first describes Poirot like this :
« His green-eyes shine « like a cat's » when he is struck by a clever idea.
« His moustache is very stiff and military »
« His head is exactly the shape of an egg » usually covered by a bowler hat.
« he has patent-leather shoes »
Poirot is a very methodic detective. He collects testimonys (témoignages) and use his logic to solve the mystery.
He defines himself his methods and usings by the following sentences: « order and méthods » and « little grey cells ».
Once, he bet with Arthur that he could solve a mystery without living his armchair. Of course, he succeded.
Hercule hasn't any real adversary except his very sensitive stomach : He suffers from sea sickness, and in « Death in the Clouds » believes that his air sickness prevents him from being more alert at the time of the murder. Later in his life, we are told:
"Always a man who had taken his stomach seriously, he was reaping his reward in old age. Eating was not only a physical pleasure, it was also an intellectual research."
